# The Confluence alternative that brings your pages with it.

Confluence Data Center ends on 28 March 2029, the cloud costs per seat plus Guard plus apps plus credits, and the search does not find what you are looking for. ThurWiki imports your spaces with a preview and converts the common macros.

## What Confluence users run into. And what ThurWiki changes about it.

Voices from public forums and reviews, some of them shortened. More reasons for switching stand on the [migration page](https://thurwiki.ch/en/alternatives/../migration.html#gruende).

1.

### The search does not find what you are looking for.

> «Search is so bad that I wasn't able to find many important process documents … I had to go through the content page by page.» – Atlassian Community, March 2025
> Quelle: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Confluence-questions/Confluence-search-function-complaints/qaq-p/871002

**ThurWiki:** Search by sound and by meaning, across titles, text and attachments in over 60 formats, from PDF and Word to scans and ZIP archives. Archived spaces do not come first; only what you are allowed to see is found.

2.

### The price stacks up.

> «… on average, we can expect those who migrate from DC to Cloud to pay around 28 percent more.» – Rodney Nissen, Atlassian consultant, quoted in The Register, 9 September 2025
> Quelle: https://www.theregister.com/2025/09/09/atlassian_will_go_cloudonly_customers/

**ThurWiki:** One price per wiki. Two-factor authentication, all 85 macros, all 41 connectors and draw.io are included; the AI runs on your own key, without credits.

3.

### The editor is replaced, and the pages break.

> «Out of 110,000 pages, 85,000 are affected.» – Atlassian Community, August 2025, on the retirement of the legacy editor
> Quelle: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Confluence-articles/The-Legacy-Editor-is-being-deprecated-in-Confluence-Cloud-Here-s/ba-p/3046832/page/2

**ThurWiki:** One editor, one document format, no forced migration. Tables with cells that merge and split, sorting and filtering while reading. No apps that fall away at the next update.

4.

### Data Center ends in 2029.

> «… we cannot migrate to cloud (tested this a lot and it does not work). For us this will mean: bye bye Atlassian.» – A Confluence customer, quoted in The Register, 9 September 2025
> Quelle: https://www.theregister.com/2025/09/09/atlassian_will_go_cloudonly_customers/

**ThurWiki:** ThurWiki imports from Data Center and Server through the Confluence API, space by space. Run in Switzerland on our own infrastructure. ThurData is a Swiss company with no US parent; the US CLOUD Act does not apply.

## How the move out of Confluence works.

**Route**

: Through the Confluence API with an address and access, space by space, from Cloud as well as from Server and Data Center. Or from the export.

**Comes across**

: Page tree, text, tables, images, attachments, links (rewritten), draw.io drawings (still editable). The common macros are converted: column, section, code, info, note, warning, tip, panel, toc, expand, drawio, view-file, children, pagetree, gallery, status, anchor, profile, recently-updated, contentbylabel, livesearch, contributors, excerpt, jira.

**Check afterwards**

: Macros that left a note (widget, iframe, table-filter), rights per space, titles that appeared twice in the source and now end with “(2)”.

[The import in five steps](https://thurwiki.ch/en/alternatives/../migration.html#import)

*Bild: The import wizard: on the left the page tree of the source, on the right the page as it would look after the import – with a table and sections – below it the buttons to import the page and to import the page with its sub-pages.*

**The preview.** Look first, then decide: before the last step nothing is written.

## Pages that quietly go stale no longer exist.

The most common ailment of a wiki is not the missing page but the wrong one: an instruction that has not been right for two years, and nobody notices. A review date turns that into an appointment.

- **A name, a date, a rhythm.** Per page a responsible person, a date and, if you want, a repetition: every 30 days, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly.

- **The notice stands on the page, not only in a mailbox.** Once the date is reached, everyone who opens the page sees it – including the engineer who needs the instruction right now. A reminder only one person gets does not help the reader.

- **Confirming is one click.** The responsible person is reminded and confirms right in the notice. With a repetition the next date counts from today – anyone confirming three months late is not immediately due again.

- **Two overviews.** “My reviews due” for the individual, and in the wiki administration all the reviews due across the wiki. The responsible person is an organisational note and not a right: they get no access they do not have anyway.

*Bild: A wiki page with a notice on a yellow background above the text: “This page should have been reviewed since 01.09.2026. Responsible: Rita Suter.”*

**Due, and everybody sees it.** The notice stands above the content, for everyone who opens the page.

*Bild: The “export pages as PDF” view: on the left the page tree with two boxes per row, one for the page alone, one for the page with all its sub-pages; on the right the chosen pages in document order and the “create PDF” button.*

**Tick what should come along.** First box: that page only. Second: the page with everything beneath it.

## And back out again: as one PDF.

A wiki you cannot get out of is a trap – you know that, moving out of Confluence right now. That is why the exit lies open.

- **One document out of many pages.** Tick across spaces, up to 300 pages per export; each begins in the PDF on a new sheet, in the order of the page tree. You choose how large it prints: 45 to 100 per cent, for type and content at once.

- **Just as the page looks.** What is printed is the real view, not a second rendering: macros, charts, draw.io drawings and tables stand in the PDF as they do in the browser.

- **With your rights, not with everybody’s.** A page you are not allowed to read stops the export rather than quietly going missing. An export that drops pages would be worse than one that never arrives.

- **And by machine.** Through the API every page as Markdown, with attachments – for an archive or for the move to the next system.

## Questions from Confluence users

**Is ThurWiki a full Confluence alternative?**

For what companies use Confluence for: yes. Spaces with a page tree, an editor with a ribbon, macros, versions, comments, approvals, fine-grained rights, Jira on the page. A review date per page with a responsible person and a reminder has existed since September 2026, and chosen pages and whole branches come back out as PDF. What is missing we say as well: ThurWiki has no whiteboards and no databases, and there is no bulk export of the whole wiki as an archive today.

**What becomes of our Confluence macros?**

The common ones are converted during the import. A macro ThurWiki does not know leaves a visible line with its name and an entry in the import report. The complete mapping is on the macro page.

**How do we record meetings?**

You write the minutes as usual, gladly from a template. On top of that comes the macro “Voice note or meeting”: record in the browser or upload a file, play it back directly on the page, optionally with a transcript through Whisper in your own house or through ChatGPT. Audio and transcript are attachments carrying the page’s rights, and the transcript is searchable.

**We have Confluence Data Center. How much time is left?**

Since 30 March 2026 Atlassian has sold no new Data Center subscriptions, from 30 March 2028 no expansions; on 28 March 2029 the subscriptions run out and the instance becomes read-only. A move of a few hundred pages needs about an afternoon for the import, plus a few days of follow-up.

**How do we stop pages going stale?**

With a review date per page: a responsible person, a date and, if you want, a repetition (30 days up to yearly). Once the date is reached, a notice stands at the top of the page – visible to everyone who opens it, not only to the responsible person – and that person is notified. Confirming is one click in the notice; with a repetition the next date counts from today. Whoever administers the wiki sees all the reviews due in one place, and each person sees their own in the user menu.

**How do we get back out of ThurWiki?**

In the interface as PDF: you tick in the page tree what should come along – per row either the page alone or the page with all its sub-pages – across spaces, up to 300 pages in one document. What is printed is the view you see, so with macros, charts and drawings. Through the API, additionally every page as Markdown, with attachments. There is no bulk export of the whole wiki as an archive today; we would rather say so beforehand.

ThurWiki is a Swiss Confluence alternative for companies that want to replace Confluence Cloud, Confluence Server or Confluence Data Center: because of the search, because of the per-seat prices with Guard, marketplace apps and Rovo credits, because of the retirement of the legacy editor, or because Data Center ends in 2029. The Confluence import runs with a preview, converts the common macros and can be repeated.

Confluence replacement, Confluence migration, Confluence Data Center end of life, Atlassian alternative Switzerland: anyone searching for that finds the route here, the comparison, and the trial import of twenty pages.
